De La Soul
Their 1989 pioneering sampletastic debut album 3 Feet High and Rising meant De La Soul were hailed as the future of hip-hop. It was a colorful, neo-psychedelic collage of samples and styles, clever rhymes and goofy humor, the album sounded like nothing else in hip-hop.
De La Soul formed while the trio -- Posdnuos (born Kelvin Mercer, August 17, 1969), Trugoy the Dove (born David Jude Jolicoeur, September 21, 1968), and Pasemaster Mase (born Vincent Mason, March 27, 1970) -- were attending high school in the late '80s. The stage names of all of the members derived from in-jokes: Posdnuos was an inversion of Mercer's DJ name, Sound-Sop; Trugoy was an inversion of Jolicoeur's favorite food, yogurt. De La Soul's demo tape, "Plug Tunin'," came to the attention of Prince Paul, the leader and producer of the New York rap outfit Stetsasonic. Prince Paul played the tape to several colleagues and helped the trio land a contract with Tommy Boy Records.
De La Soul quickly were perceived as the leaders of a contingent of New York-based alternative rappers which also included A Tribe Called Quest, Queen Latifah, the Jungle Brothers, and Monie Love; all of these artists dubbed themselves the Native Tongues posse. The rest is history, they continued througout the 90s and in to the naughties producing their own unique brand of Hip-Hop, delivering an amazing output of albums including:
De La Soul Is Dead, Buhloone Mindstate, Stakes Is High, Art Official Intelligence: Mosaic Thump, AOI: Bionix, The Grind Date.. De La Soul are not only Hip-Hop legends, they have surpassed that kind of categorisation and are true music legends, most recently they collaborated with British maverick group Gorrillas on their huge hit Feel Good inc. De La Soul are a legendary Hip-Hop force, never chasing trends like gangsta rap they were pioneers and stayed that way, their way - truly original ! Don't miss the chance to see them LIVE in Southampton at The Guildhall October 25th, brought to you by Limited Edition.
Support comes from the Uk's own:
Dirty Diggers
The two-man crew consists of Young Max & Pat Stash based in Yorkshire and East London respectively. Both make beats, both rhyme – both offer a breath of fresh air to our scene, incorporating intricate and intelligent word play over some amazing music. Their debut release on Zebra Traffic ‘Diggers Don’t Get Days Off EP’ features 4 vocal tracks and 2 instrumentals, covering a wide range of influences, and including a summer banger in ‘Ask Why?’ (Check the video on the promo CD – filmed entirely on location in Brighton on a blazing hot Brighton day!). A club banger in ‘For The Haters’ that works around a wild drum break and an incessant keyboard line. An uptempo & intense percussive number in ‘Live From The Headroom’ and a straight up tough hip hop headnodder in ‘Same Old’ Long time friend and cohort DJ Excalibah (BBC Radio 1xtra) has been supporting the Diggers for some time now on his ‘Tales From The Legend’ Show, long before the guys had any interest from a label, this lead to Rodney P hearing the music and calling up the Diggers direct to get the music These boys are worthy props for De la Soul and will lend the event a nice British Flava.
And Limited Edition fave A Skillz

A.Skillz' mini-mix for Annie Mac that was voted best mini-mix of the year by Radio 1 listeners, beating industry heavyweights such as Basement Jaxx, Mylo and Scratch Perverts. He has clocked up some serious air miles playing across Australia, Canada, America, Europe as well as, of course many appearances at limited edition events He is currently working on his first mix album for Finger Lickin Records whilst planning his next artist album which will see him team up with some major names for some seriously hot collaborations!
Limited Edition
Are a two man team consisting of one Mr Neil Homer and another called Mr Colin Owens or aka Surreal Madrid. Together they have brought to Southampton many good things of a musical nature including Mr Scruff, Audio Bullys, Groove Armada, Mylo, Plump DJs, Krafty Kuts, DJ Cash Money, Erol Alkan, Glimmer Twins, A Skillz, Gilles Peterson plus many more, it's a list of endless fun and good times done solely for their own satisfaction and with very little financial reward due to their undoubted inability to be organised and business savvy - Nevertheless the circus continues into 2006 with more musical madness brought to you by the Batman & Robin (or Laurel & Hardy) of music promoting Limited Edition - this autumn sees Mr Scruff return as does Gilles Peterson, Bugz In The attic, People Under The Stairs(in association with Squeeze 18) and of course the mighty De La soul.
